African Youth Forum
November 07, 2012
An African Union youth event, taking place in Cotonou, Benin from the 12-14th November 2012 will bring together young people, governments, NGOs and UN agencies to review progress, challenges and key human rights issues for youth in relation to sexual and reproductive health and development.
The conference aims to identify issues and accelerate progress on serious sexual and reproductive health problems for young people in Africa, notably STI/HIV-AIDS, the lack of use of contraceptive methods in a context of unprotected sexual intercourse, the frequency of unplanned pregnancies and the complications resulting from abortion, the use of unreliable sources of information on adolescent and youth sexual health.
The Forum aims to increase youth knowledge of sexual and reproductive health issues and rights and build the capacity of young people to lead on the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action beyond 2014. It will also provide an advocacy platform, to help ensure that the specific needs of young people and adolescents are reflected in policies around health, employment and sustainable economic development across the African continent.
The event will be attended by UNFPA Executive Director, Dr Babatunde Osotimehin and will feed into the ICPD Beyond 2014 Review and post 2015 development agenda.
